Garret Wonders Memorial Ride may be coming to Westerville in 2012

The Westerville Uptown Merchants Association met for the very first time on February 2 to discuss plans for the historic business district in the city. Among a variety of other events and activities planned for the year, one of the primary plans discussed at the meeting was the possibility of expanding the Garret Wonders Memorial Ride to a national event. This would draw thousands to Uptown Westerville.

Jason Carpenter, who owns Environmental Pest Management, is also an avid cyclist and is excited about the possibilities, stating that Westerville could attract as many as 8,000 to 10.000 spectators within 5 to 10 years and even host the state championships. Carpenter passed out information packets at the meeting that included a list of 28 groups and individuals in the Westerville area that support the race. Carpenter also said that he would like to use the race as a major fundraising event for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, as well as for the Westerville Parks Foundation.

Large events and fundraisers in the Westerville area could mean local print companies will be called upon for such things as banner printing, flyer printing and a number of other printing services. In addition, events such as the Garret Wonders Memorial Ride may establish the city as a racing location and draw in a number of other businesses that could require stationery printing and business card printing, as well as a variety of other printing services by local printers.

The proposal set forth by Carpenter to bring the event to Westerville was met with concern from some local business owners. There was some opposition from some individuals who have previous experience with the race.
