Canton Symphony Orchestra helps feed the needy

In a drive to bring in donations for Orchestras Feeding America, the Canton Symphony Orchestra (CSO) is offering $2 off admission to any concert remaining in the 2013-2014 season.

The coupons are available from now until the Holiday Pops concert slated for December 8, and all anyone needs to do to receive one is to donate food.

‘Orchestras Feeding America’ was created by the League of American Orchestras when members saw the film ‘The Soloist’, which was released in 2009. The movie featured such an uplifting quote about helping others, it inspired the League to create the new group. Today the organization has a membership of more than 250 orchestras and, since its foundation, it has gathered, donated, and passed out more than 400,000 pounds of food to local food banks.

In Canton, the Stark County Hunger Task Force supports more than 20 food pantries and helps 15,000 county residents every month. The CSO is teaming up with it to assist in efforts to help those in needs.

The orchestra will accept donated food at its box office during regular business hours. The box office is at 1001 Market Avenue North, Canton, in the Cultural Center for the Arts. Patrons who wish to do so may bring donations the December 8 Holiday Pops concert at Umstattd Hall.

Orchestra management officials could work with a poster printing company to create items for display throughout Canton, describing the food drive and the concerts listed in the schedule.
