Recycle waste at the Recycling Extravaganza.

On April 28, several organizations and venues will be participating in the 2012 Recycling Extravaganza in Overland Park. For those who have items lying around collecting dust then bring it to one of the many participating businesses and organizations on that day.

Items that will be accepted for recycling are:

• Cell phones
• Building materials
• Fabrics
• Clothing
• Housewares
• Electronics
• Out-of-date or unused medications
• Musical instruments
• Hearing aids
• Eyeglasses
• Sunglasses
• Hardbound books
• Bicycles

Many of the items will be passed onto those who can’t afford to purchase new items or will be disposed of safely, as in the case of out-of-date medications and electronics, which cannot be fixed.

Document shredding will also be available for a $5-$10 donation to ProShred Security. While many companies have accounts with professional shredding companies or have their own shredder on location, many of the smaller businesses and individuals can’t afford to do this. Other organizations which will be accepting items for recycling are Habitat for Humanity, Goodwill, Sprint and the Surplus Exchange.

These days there are a lot of items that cannot be thrown out in the garbage because they are unacceptable; they might contain materials that can be hazardous to the environment and which must be disposed of safely. Similarly, Overland Park printing companies must dispose of any hazardous materials they use, such as ink and toners, in prescribed and mandated ways. As with document shredding, many small businesses do not have the proper facilities to do this and rely on others to dispose of these materials for them.
