Oak Park Fire Department schedules open house

October 12, 2018 by

Oak Park residents of all ages who are interested in emergency medical services and firefighting will be interested to know that the Fire Department will be hosting an open house as part of national Fire Safety Month.

Visitors will have a chance to chat with the firefighter/paramedics who serve the community, and get up close and personal with the equipment they use. They will also be able to tour the firehouse itself, and listen to safety presentations. Light refreshments will be served, and informative handouts will be available. The organizers of this type of event have an opportunity to work with print shops to create the handouts.

Since its personnel are on call 24 hours a day, the Fire Department operates three shifts. All of the firefighters on the department are paramedics as well, since providing emergency medical care is intrinsic to the mission of the fire department. Nearly two-thirds of all calls to the department are for medical reasons.

However, not everything the department does is an emergency. It also provides classes in CPR, and how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED, as well as inspecting child seats for proper installation and safety, and monitoring public buildings for fire safety issues.

The Oak Park Fire Department’s open house is scheduled between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm tomorrow, October 13. The location is the Central Fire Station on Euclid Avenue.
