Martin Luther King Jr.’s life celebrated in Hoffman Estates

December 22, 2012 by

January 21 is Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the United States and many communities also acknowledge the day as MLK Day of Service – a day when residents pledge to spend the day helping others and striving to improve their community. The city of Hoffman Estates’ Cultural Awareness Committee holds a yearly Martin Luther King Jr. breakfast which features guest speakers and entertainment.

It is a day to celebrate Dr. King and for everyone to honor him in their own way. In past years, the community has also recognized MLK Day of services with activities such as a children’s program at the Hoffman Estates public library. It is likely that local printing companies help those holding special events on the day by providing services such as flyer printing to the organizers. Flyers can be distributed in so many ways that they are one of the most effective ways of announcing events.

The holiday was proclaimed in 1983 by President Ronald Reagan. It is a day to pay tribute to the civil rights leader who was gunned down in 1968. Many communities have parades, others have educational seminars, others have luncheons or breakfasts in which guest speakers speak about the man and his beliefs, and still others hold essay contests for students, with Dr. King and his work as the theme.

The 11th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast will take place at the Village Hall on January 21 from 8:00 am – 10:30 am. Admission is free. For more information and to make reservations, call 847-781-2606.
