Deerfield and Highland Park going to sectionals

Two local schools had something to celebrate over the last weekend in October as their cross-country teams place well in Liberty Regional competition.

The Illinois High School Association website states that the male team from Highland Park High School and the female team from Deerfield High School will both go on to the Schaumburg Sectional competition.

The Highland Park Giants have Angel Estrada to thank for placing high enough to advance. The cross country course is three miles long and he finished in first place by a margin of one second over Sam Oh from Stevenson High School. Brett Davidson and Ben Casey aided the team’s standing with their places in the middle. Tenth place went to Casey and 13th place went to Davidson. As for the girls, Mari Pine came in 17th place while Mallory Sonenthal came in 31st. Both qualify for Sectionals.

Abbey Osborn of the Deerfield Warriors placed fifth and earned her team a spot in the Sectionals. Other team members who finished well include Jordyn Jensen (13th), Claudia Giacone (21st), and Hadley Lloyd (23rd). The boys’ team also qualified; Maor Kramer placed 26th while Billy Anderson came in 31st.

It looks set to be a year to remember for the schools’ cross country teams, who may want to commemorate it with a special Sectionals photo that they can send holiday cards to family. The school could order banner printing services to congratulate the teams and hang in the hallways or in the gymnasium of the school.
