Learn how to start a small business

The Small Business Development Center is presenting “Introduction to Starting you own Business” at the C. Burr Artz Library on February 6 from 6-7:45 pm. It is a free event but you must register in advance.

Starting your own small business can be a very daunting prospect. Will it cost a lot of money? Can I do it on my own? When and how do I arrange for business card printing? What type of businesses are needed and will survive in Frederick? There seem to be so many questions and things to think about and things to plan for. However, with help from the Small Business Development Center and other organizations, it can be much smoother.

There are also online sources that can help you. For example, the Small Business Administration website lists 10 steps to follow in starting a business:

1. Write a business plan
2. Get business assistance and training
3. Choose a business location
4. Finance your business
5. Determine the legal structure of your business
6. Register a business name
7. Get a Tax ID number
8. Register for State and local taxes
9. Obtain business licences and permits
10. Understand employer responsibilities

If you follow these steps and if you attend seminars such as this one you should not run into any problems in starting your business; it is just a matter of taking things one step at a time and not skipping any steps. You should also join local business organizations which provide training in all aspects of business ownership and that will also give you access to other business leaders in the community who can advise you.
