Families to go green at Beltsville area fair

November 2, 2013 by

A park in the Beltsville area is preparing to host a unique arts and crafts show for the entire family.

In just over one week’s time, the Trash to Treasure Green Fair will be returning to the Watkins Nature Center in Upper Marlboro. Poster printing may be on the rise as staff from the Prince George’s County Department of Parks and Recreation work to boost attendance at this annual event.

This will be the fair’s fifth year at this location. More than 40 Maryland-based vendors will be on site to sell their handicrafts, all of which will be made from recycled or organic materials. Items available for purchase will include wood carvings, jewelry, woven fiber products, soaps, and candles.

Representatives from local non-profit groups will lead craft-making demonstrations. These will include projects designed specifically for children.

Nature Jams will provide live entertainment, singing tunes that teach the youngest attendees what they can do to help the environment. Visitors will also be able to donate their unwanted books in exchange for some new ones. In addition, attendees will have a chance to enter raffles and win REI camping tents, rock climbing passes, gift certificates.

The Trash to Treasure Green Fair is set for Saturday, November 9 and will run from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm. It will take place rain or shine, and there will be no charge to attend.

The Watkins Nature Center is located at 301 Watkins Park Drive. Those requiring additional information may call (301) 218-6702.
