Independent wrestling coming to Merced

January 24, 2018 by

Residents of Merced are about to see indie wrestling slam into their town.

Far from the big arenas of the WWE, the past 15 years has seen a renaissance in independent and alternative wrestling. California has played its part of its renaissance, hosting the American forays of acclaimed New Japan Pro Wrestling and Reseda-based cult favourite Pro Wrestling Guerrilla.

Best of the West Wrestling, a promotion promising “the best wrestling on this coast or any other coast”, has been running shows in the Fresno area for the past two years. Their events feature local up-and-coming wrestlers, as well as veterans like local legend JR Kratos and former WWE star Sinn Bodhi.

Best of the West will hold a set of TV tapings in Merced’s American Legion Hall on February 10. No matches or talents have been announced thus far. While none of the wrestlers appearing may be household names yet, Best of the West promises affordable, family-friendly entertainment. Families with a young wrestling fanatic may be especially interested in a more approachable version of the spectacle.

Independent wrestling promotions use both old and new media to market themselves. Best of the West, which distributes shows through both YouTube and public access television, is an example of this. Print media such as banners and poster printing, enabled by the accessibility of local marketing services, are also a major part of how local wrestling companies spread the word.
