Unique opportunity for Melville singles

April 4, 2018 by

Locals can enjoy a nature walk and gain some historical knowledge while searching for Mr. or Ms. Right

Participants will first complete a scenic hike on Jayne’s Hill before touring the birthplace of Walt Whitman. The trail is an intermediate hike that is the highest point in Toads Pond or Long Island at 401 feet. The summit is marked with a boulder engraved with Whitman’s poem “Paumanok”.

The tour of the house enables visitors to enjoy art and furnishings from the 19th Century. There is also an interpretive center that houses portraits, manuscripts and much more relating to Whitman. Walt Whitman was born at this location in 1819 and become one of the best-known poets in America. Whitman’s poetry was controversial when first published with many references within his work considered risqué.

A gift shop on-site enables visitors to purchase souvenirs and the picnic areas on the grounds are available to meet and greet others from Melville and the surrounding area during the event. The views from their trail provide the potential for those seeking images for poster printing or other printing services.

The tour is $10 per person and an additional $5 is requested for the hike. Those that would like to skip the hike can still join the group for the tour. The event takes place on April 15 from 10:30 AM to 1:00 PM. The Walt Whitman birthplace is located at 246 Old Walt Whitman Road in Huntington Station. Please visit the Eventbrite website to reserve a spot.
