Local mother organizes thank you hospital toy drive

The Winthrop University Hospital recently received a large toy donation for their children’s program.

Massapequa Park mom Lauren Lanzillotta, a member of the Board of Directors for the New York Chapter of the Children’s Heart Foundation (CHF-NY) used her contacts and influence to organize a successful toy drive for the Child Life Program at Winthrop University Hospital. The gifts arrived before Christmas, but are handed to children at the hospital throughout the year. CHF-NY has distributed over 4,000 toys to local hospitals over the last few years.

Lanzillotta volunteered at the organization after her son, Ronald, was born with a rare heart defect. He is doing well thanks to the care of the pediatric cardiology team at the hospital. She said:

“Our son is helping so many boys and girls already, and he doesn’t even know it. He’s given me purpose, and it gives us joy to know these toys will benefit so many patients at Winthrop.”

The gifts help to comfort sick children and the children and siblings of patients at the hospital Donations are not needed only at Christmas; flyers and brochures help to raise awareness of much-needed drives like this.
Local groups, charities and residents that want to help can hold their own toy drives at any time during the year. Contact the New York Chapter of the Children’s Heart Foundation or the Winthrop Hospital Child-life program to find out more.
