The month of May will bring Huntsville a new restaurant thanks to Dairy Queen’s continuing rapid growth.

Rich Van Buskirk, a Dairy Queen (DQ) franchisee, plans to add to his franchise holdings with a DQ Grill and Chill at 4116 University Drive. The 2,800-square-foot restaurant will open on May 22 and accommodate 72 patrons while creating 75 jobs.

An experienced restaurateur, Buskirk operates several other DQ drive-thru locations in the Huntsville area. Other nearby DQ locations include County Line Road, U.S. 72, Memorial Parkway, and Oakwood Avenue.

Dairy Queen is a chain of fast food restaurants that prominently features soft-serve ice cream in a variety of forms. The American Dairy Queen Corporation is part of International Dairy Queen, Inc., which is based in Minnesota. A Berkshire Hathaway subsidiary, International Dairy Queen also owns Karmelkorn and Orange Julius. It has its corporate offices in Edina, Minnesota, which is a suburb of Minneapolis.

The first Dairy Queen was opened on June 22, 1940 by Sherb Noble in Joliet, Illinois. Its menu comprised a variety of frozen dessert items such as soft-serve ice cream. Today the DQ logo design is widely known and instantly recognized. Dairy Queen has over 6,700 eateries in the U.S., Canada and over two dozen other countries, and Alabama is home to 67 locations at present.
