The Press to open in Hartford

An upscale eatery known as The Press plans to open in Hartford, taking over the space formerly occupied by the Black Bear Saloon on Allyn Street. The Press will be operated by 1st Cut Restaurant Group.

As might be expected from the name, the new restaurant will have a “news” theme, according to 1st Cut’s vice president, David Heath. The décor will feature newspaper articles and similar items, plus menu items will play off the name “press” by using French presses, waffle irons, and panini presses to create the dishes. Small shareable plates will be featured, and the restaurant’s craft cocktails will be influenced by the drinks popular during Prohibition.

1st Cut is currently revamping the space, redoing the lighting and floors, giving it a coat of fresh paint, and using dark metals and woods in the design. Heath says 1st Cut is planning to be a more competitive player in the upscale-casual dining, and casual dining, markets, and The Press is the first step in that direction. He says he hopes to bring people back into the Hartford downtown from the suburbs.

The Press should open during the early part of June, Heath says.

When new businesses like this open, management might consider distributing promotional products to the earliest customers. Such products are not only a token of appreciation to people for trying the new establishment, but they also help to build the brand.
