Glenside to welcome Vicki Lawrence

February 11, 2018 by

Actress and comedian Vicki Lawrence is on her way to Glenside, and she is bringing ‘Mama’ with her.

Lawrence created the character of Thelma Harper, aka ‘Mama’, during the seventh season of ‘The Carol Burnett Show’, which she had joined as an inexperienced senior in high school. During her years on the show, Lawrence participated in hundreds of sketches, but her creation of ‘Mama’ was the work for which she became best known.

In fact, the character was so popular that when the Burnett show ended, Lawrence went on to play ‘Mama’ for another six years in the show ‘Mama’s Family’. In 2001, the ‘Carol Burnett Showstopper Special’ aired, and drew 50 million viewers.

The level of response to the special prompted Lawrence to revive Mama, complete with her sensible shoes, and send her on tour in the ‘Vicki Lawrence and Mama: A Two-Woman Show’ production.

During the show, Lawrence appears first, explaining that the show is a mix of music, comedy, and her observations about life in general. Then Mama gets to take the stage, voicing her unrepentant opinions about anything and everything. Lawrence says the material she’s creating for Mama today is more cutting-edge and modern than in past routines.

Vicki and Mama will appear next Friday, February 16, at 8:00 pm at the Keswick Theatre in Glenside. Managers of events like this could work with a poster printing company to create colorful posters for the show.
