Gardena cleans up this month

September 8, 2016 by

Residents in Gardena are breaking out their brooms and rakes for the 17th Annual Keep Gardena Beautiful Day.

The all-volunteer event brings in a large number of city and private projects in one ambitious day of work.

The cleanup is about more than just city projects and improvement of public grounds. Anyone who is a resident of the city can submit an idea for a project and the city will help match volunteers to it by either interest or geography. Possible ideas include painting houses for disabled or elderly residents, tidying of vacant lots, and minor fixups for damaged homes. All submitted projects require final city approval before being included as part of the event.

Volunteers who sign up for the cleanup efforts will be assigned one or more tasks, along with the addresses and time to meet up for each project. After a long morning of planting flowers, maintaining park grounds, or participating in the other numerous things to do, the flyers promise that a lunch will be provided at Mas Fukai Park for everyone who volunteered. By the afternoon, the event will be over and Gardena will be a more beautiful place.

The Keep Gardena Beautiful Day will take place on September 17 from 8:30 am to 12:00 noon at various locations around the city. Volunteer signups are available on the city website. Anyone interested in more information should contact the city directly.
