Farmington Hills has new finance director

Steve Barr was recently hired to take over as the finance director/treasurer of Farmington Hills. He started July 5, replacing Dave Gajda, who served for seven years before retiring.

Dave Boyer, the city manager, hired Barr despite the fact he has no experience in municipal finances. He was impressed with Barr’s experience in the educational field, where he managed the finances of a number of school systems, which Boyer believes are similar to those of the city. In addition, Barr is a certified public accountant and has 30 years’ experience in finance.

Barr comes to Farmington Hills from Novi, where he was the assistant superintendent for business and operations in the school district for six years. He also served as executive director of business of the Macomb Intermediate School District, and worked for the Troy School District as its finance director. Other experience includes 11 years with Utica Community Schools, where he held a number of positions, including controller.

In addition to working in the educational sector, Barr was an auditor for Price Waterhouse and for Plante Moran. He is a graduate of Michigan State University, which granted him a Bachelor’s degree in accounting, and is a frequent speaker at workshops and conferences at both the local and state level.

Municipalities like this can benefit if officials work with a newsletter printing company to create a local newsletter for residents.
