Chicken dancing, bratwurst, and wiener running hit Kentucky

Any Southgate folks that did not get enough beer and brats over the Labor day weekend could well have made up for it if they headed into Cincinnati last weekend, when it was time for the annual Oktoberfest Zinzinnati to get under way.

The three-day event, billed by the organizers as the biggest Oktoberfest fest this side of Munich, got under way from 5:00 pm on Saturday.

With poster printing all over the tri-state area weeks ahead of the German celebration, hundreds of thousands were expected to hit the streets.

For 2013, the festival saw a total of seven stages packed with performers and many other types of entertainment. As for those brats, there were over 30 food stalls, many offering the German classic, as well as a host of other culinary delights. There were also around 800 beer barrels being worked through.

As much as the food and drink is a popular part of the fest, its real attraction is in the entertainment, though.

This year’s runaway highlight was the appearance of George Takei. Playing the role of the festival grand marshal, he also led the Chicken dance. It is nothing new for the deep voiced Star Trek actor, as anyone catching his appearance on the U.K’s ‘I’m A Celebrity‚ĶGet Me Out Of Here’ TV program will know.

There was much more to enjoy and laugh at too though, such as the beer barrel rolling, bratwurst eating competition, and, of course, the always popular running of the dachshund wieners.
