Uber restaurant delivery has arrived in Durham

Uber, moving beyond its ride sharing app, has expanding into the prepared food delivery service, and on Wednesday it moved that service into Durham and the rest of the Triangle.

As of its first day, UberEats had 100 eateries signed up to have their food delivered. For some, it was the first time their food was offered for delivery. Patrons wishing to have food delivered must first download the UberEats app, which is separate to the company’s ride sharing app.

Uber operates its ride sharing service in 734 cities worldwide. By contrast, its new UberEats app is only in 120 cities. UberEats was drawn to the Triangle area, according a company spokesman, for its lively culinary climate and the area’s colleges with their hordes of students desiring food delivery.

A September New York Times article says that UberEats is already turning a profit in 20% of the cities offering it. It is likely that any ad specialties and other promotional materials will include how to access the UberEats app to speed growth.

Durham residents can avoid the usual $4.99 delivery fee on their first two orders. A free delivery promotion can be accessed by entering the code ‘EATSTRIANGLE’. The app provides an option to tip Uber drivers or they can be tipped with cash upon delivery of the food.
