Doral approves paid parental leave

Doral has become the first municipality in the Miami-Dade County to approve paid parental leave for employees of the city. The measure is permanent, and gives new parents who work for the city as much as four weeks’ paid leave.

Ana Maria Rodriguez, a city councilwoman, supported the initiative, which was first approved in 2016. At that time, the measure was a pilot program that was to be tried out for a single year, and then reviewed after the city had time to evaluate how much it might cost Doral.

Rodriguez explained that she had first-hand experience of the strain and difficulties caused when a new parent is forced to choose between giving up a paycheck to stay home with a newborn—risking losing a job—or going to work shortly after the birth of a child, losing the important connection with the infant. Rodriguez said this is both an economic issue and a moral one, and no family should have to choose.

Other city and county governments, such as Wellington, West Palm Beach, Miami Beach, and Miami-Dade, are creating parental leave programs of their own, knowing these measures will help employees balance their work commitments with their home lives more successfully.

Measures like this may require some explanation, and officials might find it useful to work with a flyer printing company to create a mailer for residents, describing the program.
