Upcoming competition will showcase the art of wood carving

January 31, 2016 by

The 33rd annual Showcase of Woodcarvings is taking place for two days next month, hosted by the Charlotte Woodcarvers Club.

The theme of this year’s event is ‘Fairy Tales’, and this is the largest competition of its kind in the Southeast. There are expected to be approximately 120 carvers from 15 different states who will be showcasing more than 800 carvings.

The carvers will be competing in three divisions: novice (carving for three years or less), intermediate (those who have already competed in novice), and open (those who have previously won in novice or intermediate). Under those divisions there are 30 categories of carvings including ducks and human figures, and these are further divided into natural or painted.

For the public, there will be several free lessons, carving demonstrations, and seminars. There will also be a raffle and a silent auction. Vendors are also set to be on hand to sell carvings, carving tools, and supplies.

A brochure is available for this event, perhaps provided by a local brochure printing company. It will likely be distributed throughout the area, including to nearby Gastonia.

The Showcase of Woodcarvings will be held at the Marion Diehl Recreation Center from February 20 to 21. Admission is free of charge. To get the latest information about this event, call 704-529-1748.
