Coral Springs area walks the plank

May 1, 2018 by

Coral Springs pirate wannabes can participate in the area’s first free annual Pirate Festival, which will be coming later this month.

The venue will have live entertainment including pirate encampments. Coral Springs kids will have a zone where they can climb aboard a pirate ship, play pirate games, and get their faces painted.

Pirate-themed contests will have awards for the best dressed pirate persons of all ages, canines, and an art contest.

The most traditional pirate race will be the raft race. Here, teams composed of corporations, schools and local organizations will vie for awards and bragging rights as they maneuver rafts and pirate row boats down the New River. The first raft and the first row boat to cross the finish line will receive awards. Other trophies will be given to the most creative craft and the most pirate-like craft.

Spectators are sure to be busily getting their banner printing done so they can show their support along the riverbank as the crafts drift by. New races this year will be the paddle board races, which will be divided into age categories. Rules encourage the use of super soakers and water guns, and dogs are invited.

The Fort Lauderdale Pirate Festival will be Saturday, May 12 from 11 am until 7 pm at Esplanade Park in downtown Fort Lauderdale.

Sponsorships and all profits will go to the Fort Lauderdale Rotary Club’s charitable programs and scholarship fund.
