A test that can screen young athletes for a particular heart condition is being offered in Cedar Park, and all local families are invited to take advantage of this free opportunity.

Championship hearts is providing hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) screening, and it is recommended that this only needs to be done once unless there are symptoms of a heart condition. It is estimated that as many as 1 in 500 people live with HCM and may not even know it.

Each youth who wishes to be screened will need to have a signed parental waiver, and should arrive for their test wearing loose clothing. The procedure usually only takes around 20 minutes, but there may be some wait time before each screening is performed. While there is no cost to participate, a donation is welcome, as this will help to meet the costs of running the program.

Those who have are screen for HCM may opt to be included in the Texas Adolescent Athlete Heart Screening Registry (TAAHSR) research study. The youth and their parents or caregivers can discuss if they wish to do so, and they will be asked to sign consent documents. A company that provides letterheads will be able to design forms such as these.

This opportunity for young athletes to protect their health will be taking place on August 25th at the Austin Regional Clinic Cedar Park in Cedar Park. The event is scheduled to begin at 9:00 am.
