North Canton post office to close

March 1, 2018 by

The City of Canton and the North Canton Area Chamber of Commerce are working together to find a location for the North Canton post office, which will shut down later in the year. The new post office will be a retail-only location that is smaller than the current facility, but a space hasn’t been found.

Daryl Revoldt, councilman-at-large, who is in charge of the relocation project, says the city has asked the chamber to make a list of sites that could meet the requirements of the post office. These include a space comprising 1,500 to 2,000 square feet, which would have room for post office boxes, and a 21-foot counter. In addition, the post office would prefer to find a stand-alone structure that it could lease long-term, since it doesn’t want to buy the premises. In addition, the chamber would like to find a buyer for the location of the current post office.

Since the post office has such specific requirements, none of the locations suggested by either the chamber or the city have been suitable.

Revoldt said it was important to keep the post office in north Canton, because once the community loses the service, it’s gone for good. The city is asking for suggestions from residents about possible locations.

Efforts like this can be more effective if officials work with a flyer printing company to create a mailer for residents, describing the situation.
