Padres fans enjoy a day at the ballpark

The San Diego Padres love to interact with their fans, and last Saturday brought another event for San Diegans to enjoy the Padres’ hospitality.

The weekend was the date of the first ‘Swing for your Seats’ event held at Petco Park, the Padres’ home field. In fact, this is the first such event ever held by a Major League Baseball team anywhere.

The rules were extremely simple—everyone who stepped up to the bat faced a pitching machine 55 feet away that was hurling pitches at 70 miles per hour. Contestants used a wooden bat and each got two pitches, but was only allowed one swing. If a fan managed to hit a ball out of the park, they won two season tickets valued at over $4,600.

As it happens, a lot of people never touched the ball and no one won the tickets, but most appeared happy just to be on the field and seeing what the players see every day. Others also said the size of the park seemed overwhelming when they were able to see it from a player’s viewpoint.

The Padres’ season opener is March 30, and club officials might work with a flyer printing company to develop handouts, building on the success of this event to create excitement about the opening game.
