Walk a Mile in Her Shoes to step forward

April 11, 2013 by

The annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes fundraising event is to take place in Redding this weekend.

The walk, which helps to raise funds for the Shasta Women’s Refuge and Family Justice Center, is geared towards the men in the community as they strap on a pair of women’s heels and rack up donations. Women are encouraged to participate as well. The walk begins at 10 a.m. on the north side of Market Street Promenade.

In addition to generating money for the non-profit, the event is also in recognition of National Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Ken White, who is the Development Director for the center, stated:

“To really have men speaking to the need for respecting women and showing them that, you know, there are caring men out there who really want to see them heal, and trying to release that stigma from some of the victimization that occurs and bring awareness to the issue through men.”

Fundraising walks, drives, and similar activities are typically advertised within a community with poster printing and flyer printing that is displayed or distributed in the weeks prior to the event. These advertising methods are often supplied by print companies in the area.

This year’s Walk a Mile activity marks the sixth year for the fundraiser. The center is hoping to raise approximately $30,000 this year through the Walk in Her Shoes event and a similar fundraising activity, Pizza and Pumps, later in the month.

The walk begins at 10:00 am this Saturday, April 13, on the north side of Market Street Promenade.
