Surfers to make waves in Oceanside

The 37th Annual World Bodysurfing Championships are coming back to Oceanside. The two-day event is expected to draw 350 to 400 competitors from across the globe, along with legions of enthusiasts, supporters, and fans of this ever-evolving sport.

The field is split into age brackets and by gender, with competitors as young as 12 eligible to enter and compete against those around their age before ultimately facing the finalists from each group to determine a grand champion.

A bodysurfer rides waves without any form of board, ski or other flotation device. Competitors are allowed a wetsuit and fins and are required to wear a regulation cap. Three judges score each competitor’s wave ride out of 10, keeping the three highest scores during each 15-minute heat. The top two or more scorers from each heat move on to the next one.

Vendors will be featuring their products along the grounds, and the Championships provide ample opportunity for area businesses to advertise and become local sponsors. Banner printing and flyer printing allows for the most exposure along Oceanside’s coast.

Day one action starts at 6:30 am on Saturday, August 17 and continues until 1:15 pm. A free lunch is provided for all the participants following the day’s competition. Day two heats begin at 6:30 am on Sunday, August 18 with the women’s grand championship contest at 12:55 pm and the men’s grand championship at 1:20 pm. The awards presentation will follow.

Surf fans should ride the wave to 1 Oceanside Pier, Oceanside, CA 92054 to cheer for their favorite competitors or simply enjoy the day’s festivities.
