Local female-led group helps families for the holidays

The La Palma-Cerritos chapter of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) is doing its part to help the less fortunate this holiday season. For weeks, the women have been gathering small and travel-sized toiletries to fill hand-sewn gift bags that will be given to needy families in the area. They also chose two families in the area to “adopt” for the holiday season, and have collected gift items specifically for those families.

Many AAUW members arrived early to the November 21 meeting to help fill the 70 gift bags they spent so much time sewing. At the same meeting, they covered an entire table with gifts and donations for the two adopted families. Some members brought donated toys and clothing, while others gave gift certificates to local businesses, non-perishable food, and other items.

The AAUW is a non-profit group geared toward empowering women, both as individuals and in their communities. Since its founding in 1881, the organization has dedicated its work to bettering the lives of women and families all over the world. In the last year alone, the group has given over $4.3m in educational and professional fellowships and grants. Charity programs like the La Palma-Cerritos branch’s holiday giving are a regular part of their work.

A community charity drive depends on spreading the word that donations are needed. A local printing company can help create promotional materials that are informative and easy to distribute through the neighborhood. This can help improve the outcome in gift and donation drives.
