There is certainly a buzz around Gardena at the moment, kicking off with Mayor Paul K. Tanaka hosting a Community Appreciation Night next week.

Admission is a $10 donation for the February 20 event. Social hour begins at 5:30 pm with dinner at 6:30 pm. The event will be held at the Nakaoka Community Center, 1670 West 162nd Street. For reservations or more information, call Nancy Ward at (310) 217-9507.

That weekend, Black History Month, ‘An Afternoon in the Park’, will be celebrated from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm on Saturday, February 23 at Rowley Park, 13220 South Van Ness Avenue, Gardena. There will be live entertainment, food vendors and craft vendors, and a petting zoo. Admission is free. For more information, call the recreation department at (310) 217-9537.

After that, poll workers are needed for the city of Gardena’s upcoming general municipal election on March 5. General elections are held in the March of odd-numbered years. Visit the city’s website for candidate information.

Poll workers must be residents of Los Angeles County and a citizen of the United States. They must be aged 18 or older and a registered voter in California. They must also be available to work between the 6:30 am and 9:00 pm to set up the polls, assist voters and close the polls. It is also helpful if possible workers can speak Japanese, Spanish, Korean, or Vietnamese.

Stipends are available and training will be provided to workers. For more information, call Donna G. Schwartz, interim chief deputy city clerk at (310) 217-956. Banner printing makes an ideal way to alert communities to upcoming special community events.
