Bike to Work Day seeks to pump up health awareness

May 17 is Bike to Work Day and, among the 90 pit stops across the county this year, El Cajon will host one while the nearby town of Santee will host two.

El Cajon’s pit stop will be located on Magnolia Avenue near Main Street. Santee’s two stops will be at the intersection of Mast Boulevard and Carlton Hills and on Pathway Street.

Across the county, pit stops will be open between the hours of 6:00 am and 9:00 am. For those riders who pre-register online, snacks and a ‘Bike to Work Day’ T-shirt are available during their commutes.

In addition to the exercise and free gifts, participants who register during the month of May for Bike to Work Day can win prizes. By logging their trips using TripTracker at the iCommute website, they will be entered automatically for a variety of great prizes.

Savvy merchants might consider contacting their local print companies to see if they can find a way to use the Bike to Work theme as a tie in with their own products or services. Anything a company can do to increase the convenience of those who wish to commute on their own power is likely to gain loyal customers and increased sales.

Few people are aware that the San Diego area has over 1,000 miles of bikeways. Cyclists can view the San Diego Regional Bike Map as well as obtain biking information and tips at the iCommute website.
