The old and the new to be celebrated this week

This Wednesday, May 8, is set to be a busy day in the area, with the very different subjects of veterans and social media to be approached on the day.

A special tribute celebrating veterans begins at 7:30 pm on Wednesday at the Hollywood American Legion, 2035 North Highland Avenue in Los Angeles, close to Downey.

This event is hosted by the American Legion and Hollywood Heritage and will begin with a cocktail reception. Authors Bruce Torrence and Lisa Mitchell will showcase the anecdotes, film clips, and photos that inspired their recent book.

A raffle is available with tickets priced at only $1. Tours of the historic building built in 1929 will be led throughout the evening.

Admission for American Legion members and veterans is free, and parking will be available in the Hollywood Bowl lot.

On the same night in Los Angeles, those in the entertainment industry can learn how to pitch their show using social media outlets. With websites like Facebook and Linkedin becoming more and more popular, it only makes sense to utilize them for advertising and business promotion, while also making sure their business card printing orders are kept up to date.

Storyteller Cindy Marie Jenkins will lead the workshop. She specializes in training nonprofits and small businesses in how to use social media to their advantage. Jenkins is the marketing and outreach director for 24th Street Theatre.

The workshop is $40, and accompanying guests are $20. It will be held at the Theatre Asylum, 6320 Santa Monica Boulevard, Los Angeles.
