Whale of a time to be had with the Ocean Institute

July 24, 2013 by

It is the time of year when explorers can search the oceans for the majestic blue whales.

Cruises will be held from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm as of this Saturday, July 27, through Saturday, September 14, 2013. Participants will be taken to the feeding grounds of the blue whales aboard the Sea Explorer. The cruise is ideal for kids aged eight or older, although anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

The cruise will be led by Ocean Institute marine biologists who will use a variety of equipment such as plankton nets, sediment samplers, acoustic arrays, and a video microscope to bring the world under the ocean alive to passengers. Other sea life to encounter may include dolphins and sea otters.

Admission is $22 for adults and $19 for children who are Ocean Institute members. Regular public admission is $35 for adults and $22 for children. For more information, call (949) 496-2274.

The Institute is only open to the public at weekends from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. General admission is free to members. For non-members, admission is $6.50 for adults ages 13 and up, $4.50 for youth ages 3 to 12, and free for kids aged two and younger. The Ocean Institute is located at 24200 Dana Point Harbor Drive.

Those who attend might be inspired enough by the ocean life to create their own greeting cards at a local printing company and send them to family and friends.
