Bellingham athletes go into training for upcoming Bellingham Traverse

August 1, 2017 by

The annual Bellingham Traverse is only a few weeks away, and those who are interested are busily training to participate in the six-leg course.

To get a practice run through the routes, teams and individuals are encouraged to take advantage of the practices during August. The paddle boat practice will begin at Marine Park with a course taking the paddler into Bellingham Bay, around Starr Rock, back down to Taylor dock, and on up to the finish line at Cornwall Beach.

The practice for the Mountain Bike leg of the race will begin at the parking lot of the Lake Padden Tennis courts. This will be a six-mile challenging single track. The practice will be timed for 50 minutes, with the course going clockwise along the Lake Trail, up Expert Loop, and down to switchbacks. The trails will then bring the rider back to the starting line.

The 3.4-mile practice will be through Fairhaven Park and should take about 30 minutes. This course begins at Harris and 6th, follows the Greenways trails, and goes through well-marked trails in Chuckanut Community Forest.

Friends and families of the athletes still have time to get some banner printing done so they can display their support along the routes.

The practices will be August 8, 15, and 31 respectively. The first three will begin at 5:30 pm and the last one will start at 6:00 pm.
