New charter school to open in Baton Rouge

A BASIS school in Baton Rouge is currently under construction, with a scheduled opening date of August of this year.

With its roots in Arizona about 20 years ago, BASIS, short for Building Academic Success in School, has a reputation as being among the highest-performing public schools in the state. BASIS Baton Rouge will start with a primary school building that will be 40,000 square feet in area and cost close to $10m. Middle and high school buildings are planned for the future.

Women’s Hospital is leasing the seven acres of land adjacent to its facility for the new school at no cost. A senior vice president with Woman’s Hospital, Stan Shelton, said that under a Louisiana corporate partnership law, the hospital can provide financial support to the school and claim up to half of the school’s slots. His long-term goals are to build a 100-acre mixed-use development on the 200-acre campus of the hospital that includes the school and a childcare center.

BASIS Baton Rouge is attractive in that no minimum grade-point average or entrance exams are required. To qualify, a student needs only to live within the areas served by the East Baton Rouge Parish school system. Print shops can be used to promote such schools and what they can bring to the local community.
