Baton Rouge proposal to add more apartments in downtown

The City of Baton Rouge Planning committee recently received a site plan for an apartment complex of 142 units to be built in the downtown area at Florida and North Sixth streets.

To be known as The Lofts at 6C, the complex would be six stories in height and have 84 two-bedroom and 58 one-bedroom units. There would also be a swimming pool, clubhouse, courtyards, and 2,859 square feet of commercial space.

John O. Hearin is proposing the complex. He owns several downtown properties and parking lots and has been spend some time discussing for plans for a mixed-use building between Florida and Convention along a section of Sixth Street that he owns. Hearin owns a parking lot on the proposed site, and that would be demolished so as to build the apartments.

The downtown area has seen a great deal of construction of apartments in recent years. Last year, 150 units were added by the 440 on Third and 525 Lafayette developments. There are also five apartment complexes also under development that will add another 176 units, including the Commerce Building, the Maritime One Building, the Onyx Residences, and the Beauregard Quarters development.

The commission will be voting on the plans in February and may turn to a local print company for creating informational material that can be mailed out to those in the community about the proposed project.
