Bakersfield goes Irish

An Irish Christmas will be presented at the Fox Theater in early December.

This will be a family-friendly holiday event reminiscent of the traditional Irish Christmas programs found on PBS. These have the Emerald Ile’s traditional music, dancing including the popular Irish step dance, and singing.

World champions Tyler Schwartz from Magic of the Dance and Scott Doherty from Lord of the Dance and Riverdance will head the cast of high-energy dancers. The evening will include St. Stephen’s Day chasing of the wren, the Celtic tradition of butter making, and drawing down the half door.

Irish tenors and others will be singing Christmas carols from those ancient tunes associated with long ago Ireland, to the more familiar Little Drummer Boy, Silent Night, and the Carol of the Bells. All this will be accompanied by fiddles, flutes, bodhrans (Irish hand drums), and pipes.

Among the favorable reviews this program has received, a reporter from The Irish Herald, the West Coast’s oldest Irish newspaper, remarked:

“The capacity crowd nearly brought the house down at the end of the evening.”

Those who love Irish music still have time to get this information to their music organizations in time for their December newsletter printing. An Irish Christmas will be Wednesday, December 6 at Bakersfield Fox Theater, 2001 H Street Bakersfield. The curtain goes up at 7:00 pm, and tckets range from $31.25 to $67.50.
