Walk to fight Alzheimer’s

The Northern Virginia Walk and Candlelight Rally will take place inside the Reston Town Center on September 30 from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm. The walk is part of the Walk to End Alzheimer’s taking place in approximately 600 communities throughout the United States.

There are no fees to take part in the walk and participants raise pledges from friends, family, work colleagues, and total strangers. Walkers will receive a T-shirt at registration. Many people walk as individuals but many more form teams to take part in the walk. Teams can be made up of family members, friends, or colleagues.

Forming a team might actually be an excellent team building activity for local businesses. The business can make a great effort to inform employees of the walk and ask people who can to participate. Participation can mean walking, donating money to the team, or raising pledges from their family and friends. The company could then hold a competition for who can raise the most money, with the winner possibly rewarded with a day off work or a certificate of merit. Printing companies in the National Capital Area, including McLean, could help design and print a certificate suitable for framing.

Alzheimer’s is now the sixth highest cause of death in the United States. Organizations such as the Alzheimer’s Association are working hard to raise money for research and public education about this devastating disease that affects people’s memories and their future. The goal of this year’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s is to raise $170,000.
