Astoria attends free contemporary ballet performance

July 5, 2017 by

BalletX and the YYDance Company will be performing a free three-hour presentation of modern ballet paired with the music of the late Amy Winehouse. The performance is entitled ‘Through the Fracture of Light’.

The BalletX, founded by Christine Cox and Matthew Neenan in 2005, performs innovative reworks of classic ballet. The Boston Globe has named this ensemble as one of the top 10 dance presentations of the year.

YYDance’s art director is Yin Yue, who is an internationally recognized choreographer and performer. Her company is a collaboration of freelance dance artists including Yin who perform choreographed pieces they have created.

Although the event will be free and open to as many guests as the venue can accommodate, there will be a pre-show panel composed of Yin, Cox, and Company SBB’s Stefanie Batten, which will require an RSVP to attend. This panel discussion will address the issues of women as executive directors, artistic directors, and choreographers in today’s dance scene. Apollonaire Scherr will be the moderator.

Those in Astoria who enjoy vibrant neo-classic ballet will want to mark their calendars for Wednesday, July 26. The venue will be at the SummerStage at Rumsey Playfield, Central Park. Doors will open at 7:00 pm with the show starting at 8:00 pm, and the panel discussion will get off and running at 6:00 pm.
