Andover recognized for its budget planning efforts

The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) has recently given the Town of Andover the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its budget planning efforts.

The award letter stated that this is a major achievement for the town, and demonstrates the commitment of the government to meeting the best practices of governmental budgeting.

There are several guidelines that need to be met to show that the town can effectively prepare a budget. These are then used to determine how well the budget of a municipality serves as a financial plan, a policy document, a communications device, and an operations guide. The budget documents of the town had to meet 14 mandatory criteria within those categories, and had to be rated ‘proficient’ in all these categories.

Andrew P. Flanagan, Town Manager, who accepted the award for the town, said that he was proud of Andover’s efforts to create a concise and clear budget in this process which takes place very year, and to be able to meet international best practices. He thanked everyone who contributed to the budget process for their diligence and hard work.

The town could consider hiring a local printing company to print flyers and other materials that can be distributed to residents to let them know about the town’s special recognition.
