Mesa commemorates iconic activist

This year, Mesa will be celebrating the life and accomplishments of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a parade, festival and presentation.

The Mesa MLK Committee and the City of Mesa will be celebrating the work of King with a stroll through Downtown Mesa for its annual East Valley Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parade. The procession will feature local organizations, businesses, bands, dance groups, and community charities.

Units in parades such as this often like to get banner printing done early so they will have ways to introduce themselves to the spectators.

A festival will take place right after the parade. There will be art, music, poetry and plenty of celebration of King’s dream of hope, unity, equality, service, empathy, diversity and harmony.

Later in January, the Mesa Arts Center will be presenting ‘We Shall Overcome: A Celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’. The program will be a combination of Dr. King’s recorded speeches and a showcase of African American music that shaped the Civil Rights movement. The emcee will be Damien Sneed.

The parade will step off at the corner of Martin Luther King Jr Way and Center Street at 11:00 am January 21. The festival will be the same day and run from noon until 4:00 pm at Macdonald and Main Streets.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. presentation will be January 25 at the Piper Repertory Theater.
