Manassas pays honor to King

January 11, 2019 by

Martin Luther King Day will be coming soon and Manassas will commemorate the occasion with a presentation of Dr. King’s life and legacy called ‘We Shall Overcome’ as the first part of the 2019 Hylton Presents series.

The production will be a blend of authentic Martin Luther King’s orations and music by African-American artists that inspired the Civil Rights movement. The music will include gospel – both modern and traditional – spirituals, jazz, classical and Broadway from iconic artists such as Wynton Marsalis, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway, and Nina Simone.

Damien Sneed, the emcee, will share personal anecdotes and introduce the soloists from his seat at the piano. He will be accompanied by an instrumental ensemble and a choir.

A pre-performance discussion with members of the company will be held before the performance.

The Hylton Presents series will also feature the Shanghai Opera Symphony Orchestra early in February. The program will include Rossini’s Overture to Il Barbiere de Siviglian, Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique, and The Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto.

Season tickets to this series can be used as special corporate gifts.

A Celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will be held at Merchant Hall, Science and Technology at the Hylton Performing Arts Center on Sunday, January 20, starting at 3:00 pm.

Shanghai Opera Symphony Orchestra will be February 8 at 8:00 pm in Merchant Hall.
