New holiday treat introduced in Parma

The popular Rudy’s Strudel bakery in Parma’s Polish Village has just introduced a new pierogi in time for the holidays: the ‘Meatloaf, Smeatloaf, Double Beatloaf Pierogi’, according to an article on Cleveland.com.

If the name sounds familiar, that’s because it’s a line from the film ‘A Christmas Story’, which is connected to the area because many exteriors were shot in Cleveland. The story of Ralphie, the nine-year-old who wants a Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas, and who faces snowsuits, clanking furnaces, and snow half the year, is likely to be familiar to anyone who grew up in the Midwest.

Lidia Trempe, the owner of Rudy’s, says she was making meatloaf when her son recited the “meatloaf, smeatloaf” line, which sparked the idea of the new pierogi. She is stuffing the dumplings with homemade meatloaf, mashed potatoes and gravy, spices, and fresh herbs, which, with the exception of the red cabbage, is the meal served in the movie. Trempe says the movie and pierogis encapsulate a Cleveland Christmas, and her new pierogi marries the two traditions. She goes on to say that she believes even Randy, Ralphie’s picky-eater brother, would like her concoction.

Rudy’s has been in business for 70 years and is a fitting place for this food, since the film is set late in the 1930s. Businesses introducing something new often use poster printing to advertise the item.
