Modern Times now open in Encinitas

Modern Times, a restaurant and brewery with a Motown vibe, has opened in Encinitas, despite a debate last year that might have derailed the plans.

The venue first submitted a proposal for a tasting room in 2017, which was approved in July of that year. However, the Encinitas Citizens Committee, concerned about the number of establishments in the city’s downtown that serve alcohol, objected. Rather than abandon its plans, Modern Times worked out a compromise: it would serve food to go with it 30 craft beers. The new plan was approved, and Modern Times is now open.

The establishment, which is near the intersection of D Street and Highway 101 in the Encinitas downtown, has a retro vibe, thanks to décor that features ceramic cats, wooden tennis rackets, old-style televisions, plants hanging in macramé hangers, and other nostalgic items. New establishments like this can distribute promotional products to patrons to help building brand awareness.

Modern Times has five locations in total, three in San Diego—including the one in Encinitas—plus one in Portland, Oregon and another in Los Angeles. However, Modern Times’ Far West Lounge in Encinitas is the only one in San Diego to offer food, and it has a menu that is completely plant-based. This has turned out to be a bonus, says the organization’s Dan Reed, because it means San Diegans can enjoy the same flavorful dishes served in Los Angeles.
