Arlington runners get fit for upcoming marathon

Thousands of local runners are getting ready to run the Marine Corps Marathon coming in late October. This is the world’s largest marathon that does not award prize money, and is often cited as one of the best marathons for novice runners.

Also known as the ‘Marathon of Monuments’ and ‘The People’s Marathon’ begins and ends in Arlington at the Marine Corps War Memorial also called the Iwo Jima Monument. The run takes participants on a route through Washington DC where they can view national monuments such as the Lincoln, Jefferson, Vietnam, and Korean Memorials and the Capitol building.

Many spectators are no doubt busily getting their banner printing done to show their support for their favorite runners.

A MCM 10k will begin at the National Gallery of Art West Building. This course will follow the marathon route through the National Mall and take a short cut to the Pentagon and end at the Marine Corps War Memorial.

A Finish Festival for both races will be in downtown Rosslyn, where runners and supporters can enjoy music, food, giveaways, and post-race services.

The Marine Corps Marathon will be October 28 starting at 7:00 am and ending around 2:00 pm. The Marine Corps War Memorial is located at the intersection of Meade Street and Arlington Blvd.

Opening festivities for the MCM 10k will start at 7:45 am and the race will begin 10 minutes later.
