First Alabama REI Co-op to open in Huntsville

The outdoor retailer, REI Co-op has chosen the Rocket City as its first foray in the Alabama market and will open that inaugural store in the fall of 2019 at MidCity Huntsville.

According to an REI’s Gail Kirkland, Huntsville was chosen for its proximity to outdoor recreational areas and the growth of its outdoor sporting community. She further pointed out that REI has more than 11,000 active Alabama members, many of whom enjoy areas such as Rainbow Mountain, Blevins Gap, Guntersville Lake and the Tennessee River, all of which are in proximity to Huntsville.

The new store has plans to partner with local nonprofits to keep public spaces such as parks and local trails maintained. MidCity Park will be directly accessible from the new store. The 40-acre MidCity Park offers an outdoor amphitheater, lakeside dock, and a trail system.

Often, stores will offer relatable promotional products at grand openings or later to reward customers, which in addition to building goodwill increases the company’s name recognition.

REI opening a store at MidCity meshes with The City of Huntsville’s Master Plan for the redevelopment of what used to be the Madison Square mall property. The city’s development plan includes space for kayaking, biking, rock climbing, and running.

REI already has 12 stores in the South across Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee. The company expect to take on almost 50 employees for its Huntsville store.
