Beer version of March Madness continues, Thirsty 32

September 24, 2018 by

The first round of the Oregon Beer Showdown has finished and round two – nicknamed the Thirsty 32 – is underway as the competition continues until the final two breweries battle it out for the top spot.

Surprisingly, so far, a couple of No. 16 seeds have successfully rousted much more favored opponents thanks to aggressive social media campaigns. The top seed, Widmer Bros., barely squeaked by challenger Flat Tail while the No. 2 seed, 10 Barrel Brewing lost out to The Ale Apothecary in the first round.

Those breweries that do well, especially for their size, will likely wish to include that information on a banner printing.

Seed positions were awarded in part by the breweries productions numbers. Oregon’s top 44 breweries were ranked by production volume. Another 20 ‘wild card’ breweries were added to bring the total up to 64, just like the March Madness College Basketball brackets.

The selection of the wild cards was done by a select group of beer industry experts among which were Portland’s own Jeff Alworth of Beervana’s, New School Beer’s Ezra Johnson-Greenough and Brewpublic’s D.J. Paul. The wild cards were also ranked by production with the data provided by the Oregon Liquor Control Commission (OLCC). Those few breweries where no OLCC data was available were ranked alphabetically.

Now underway, The Thirsty 32 is finished at 11:59 pm tomorrow, September 25. Visit the website to vote.
