September 14, 2018 by

After its summer closing, Mesa Arts Center’s 2018-2019 season is about to start, and the center will be holding its annual Kickoff Festival to celebrate. The event will be free and open to the public.

There will be music on three stages. Performances will be by Sidewalk Chalk (a funk, jazz, hip hop ensemble), the Let Freedom Ring All Stars, Blaise Lantana, and the Dennis Rowland Band featuring Jesse McGuire.

The center will have hands-on art activities and artist demonstrations in glass, printmaking, ceramics, blacksmithing, jewelry, and welding. Guests can also view works of Arizona artists in the center’s artists’ cooperative gallery. The Gift Shop will have items that are appropriate for corporate gifts.

The Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum will be showing five new exhibitions with a jazz theme. They will be Faith Ringgold’s Jazz Stories, which includes quilts alongside a collection of her paper works; Ko Mo – Not Knowing, an exhibit of sound creations and a musical score of graphic symbols by Joe Willie Smith; and Eras of Jazz, a visual representation of jazz. Frank Morrison’s painting of Crazy Vibes and Thangs, and an exhibition called Jazz It Up featuring modern jazz-inspired paintings will also be on display.

Food will be available for purchase from Snowie, Life of the Party, Soundbite, Firehouse Kettle Corn and WB’s BBQ.

The Mesa Arts Center’s 2018-2019 Season Kickoff Festival is this evening, September 14, from 6:00 pm until 11:00 pm at the Mesa Arts Center at 1 E. Main Street.
