Another annual pre-state fair event has taken place; the 2018 State Fair of Texas has its Big Tex Choice Award winners.

Also known as the “fried food awards”, The Big Tex Awards is one of the State Fair’s most successful attention generators. Excitement mounts from the moment the finalists are announced until fair attendees have the opportunity to sample the fried wonders attendees have been hearing about.

Eating is a big part of a state fair, but competition is fierce so Dallas poster printing services are often employed to grab the attention of fairgoers with large colorful posters.

Concessionaires submitted their latest fried fair food creations for judging. Winners were declared in three categories:

Best Tasting Sweet was awarded to Arroz Con Leche, a battered cinnamon-spiced rice ball dipped in puff rice and then fried. Vanilla ice cream topped with caramel sauce was served along with the fried treat.

The Most Creative award went to Cotton Candy Taco with its waffle cone batter made from graham crackers and formed into a taco shell shape, the inside of which is marshmallow glazed. The “taco” filling consisted of toasted marshmallows, cotton candy, and chocolate.

Lastly, the Best Tasting Savory nod went to Fernie’s Hoppin’ John Cake. It consisted of white rice, black-eyed peas, spicy smoked sausage, bread crumbs, green onion, and eggbeaters all brought together to form a cake. This was then deep fried and topped with pickled okra and a black-eyed pea relish.
