Top Cats making a comeback

A familiar live music venue is returning to Cincinnati soon, according to an article on

Top Cats, a rock room popular between about 1990 and 2010, is reopening with a new owner, but in the same 2820 Vine Street location. Tony Engel bought the place and plans to operate under the original business model: live music. He has also bringing back the name. Most recently, the premises housed 86 Coffee Bar & Concert Venue.

Engel says there are still some minor construction issues to finish before he can open, but most of the work is straightforward. When completed, which it should be sometime this month, the space will hold 700 patrons – 350 inside, and 350 more on the patio.

Engel believes his patrons will consist of both live music fans and UC students. He says Top Cats is first and foremost a live music spot, but he intends to have college nights as well. He envisions having College Nights on Thursdays, then live music on Fridays, and at other times during the week. He adds he could start Saturdays off with a band, then switch to a DJ hosting a dance night.

Although the venue is on campus, Engel says:

“I’m not going to survive from UC’s campus alone. We need live music in there to get both groups of individuals.”
