Westbury local gets Big Apple big break

Plenty of people dream of heading to New York to pursue a career under the limelight, and Rita Posillico, a native of Westbury, is making that dream come true.

In January, Posillico directed her own musical, ‘Could Have Been’, at Hunter College. The show ran for three performances and sold out tickets in a single day.

Now, Posillico is participating in the New York Theatre Summerfest, at the Hudson Guild Theatre in Chelsea. She is remounting her musical, having made a few changes to the show over the past few months.

‘Could Have Been’ is a romantic comedy inspired by experiences from Posillico’s own life. The musical features a play-within-a-play (Romeo and Juliet) and has a chorus that provides backstory and exposition. The musical inspiration for the songs comes from Beethoven, Chopin, and Liszt.

People looking to put on their own shows can use poster printing to spread the word and increase ticket sales. Another option is to participate in a theater festival, which can help with some of the marketing needs of a production.

A total of 120 other shows are in the New York Theatre Summerfest this year. The festival will dole out prizes to the six top productions, and Posillico hopes that hers will be among them.

The musical will be performed on August 14 at 6:15 pm, August 18 at 8:30 pm, and August 19 at 1:00 pm. Tickets are $23 plus fees and are available online.
