Gastonia marketing and advertising agency marks a milestone

A 30th anniversary is being celebrated by The Sumner Group, a full-service marketing and advertising agency in Gastonia.

The company has 11 people on its staff and provides web design and development, as well as promotional products, public relations, and fundraising.

The firm is unveiling a new brand that has a nostalgic reference to the past. It will include many elements of the family heritage of Michael Sumner, including the time during the 1920s when his grandfather, born in Hartsville, South Carolina, moved to Gastonia to launch Sumner Cotton Mill. The business is looking to redesign its corporate identity, website, and perhaps logo design as part of the new branding.

Jacque Sumner, who owns the company with her husband, commented that the milestone is being celebrated by going back to the 1880s. They founded the firm in 1987, at a time when technology had barely changed since the 1940s. Many mechanical devices were used and there was not the benefit of computers to facilitate the creation of printed materials.

Since then, the business has been revolutionized by advances in computer technology and the firm has been able to keep the pace. The new brand will be based on the unique signature of Sumner’s grandfather and his portrait from 1901. Great-grandson Pet joined the firm in 2015 and encouraged the use of these items in the new logo.
